There was once a
disciple. Enthusiastic one. He was inspired to do things in cheerful way. The
disciple was very inquisitive. Very curious about everything in life. He always
questioned things around him, emotions within and all the things that he did or
felt.
One a day he went to
his Master.
Master said, “Good
Morning.” The disciple replied, “Good morning”, but in a rather dispirited way.
The Master sensed he had a very serious question. He smiled at his disciple. Before
he could ask his disciple, what had happened, the restive disciple asked,"Master, I am not happy with my life. The experiences in my life are hurting me
and I’m in lot of pain. Why do we feel so hurt? Why do we feel pain? And on the
other hand you never get hurt and are always smiling? How is this possible? ”
The master’s smile
broadened. He said, “Let’s go to the lake.”
Disciple agreed but
all along the way he was fidgeting. Finally they reached the lake. Disciple
asked, “Please tell me now.” Master smiled and asked his disciple to add the
handful of salt he was carrying into the lake. The disciple got confused but he
followed his Master’s order.
Master asked his
disciple to test the water. The disciple again agreed. Master asked, “How is
the water, son?”
Disciple replied,
“Wow! It is very refreshing.”
Master handed over a
glass to disciple and asked him to fill the glass. The Master again asked to
his disciple to add handful of water. He added it. Master asked, “Now taste
it.”
Disciple got confused.
But Master insisted him to drink that too. Reluctantly, he drank it. Again
Master asked, “How did it taste?”
Disciple angrily
replied, “Indeed, very salty.”
The Master smiled and
said, “Pain is like salt. Its saltiness does not depend on where it comes from,
but on the container that holds it. Be like the lake.”

The disciple
understood what his Master wanted to say and both smiled.
